As the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) wraps up another year of volunteer service and charitable work among its employees, the season of giving continues all year round through the utility's Charitable Assistance Program (CAP) and other heartfelt initiatives.
During the December Authority Board Meeting, HCWA Chief Financial Officer Dave Peterson updated board members on the dollars raised and benefits provided by the CAP, which is funded through customer "round-up" contributions added to their monthly water/sewer bill payments. This past year, 3,469 HCWA customers participated in the "round-up" program, which resulted in just under $20,000 being raised for the year.
The CAP helps those HCWA customers in need with their monthly water and sewer bill payments. The program is administered by Connecting Henry and Samaritans Together, who partner with the Authority to oversee the application process and the disbursement of funds.
As for charitable assistance provided by HCWA employees, many of these water professionals make individual donations to local non-profits and organizations via payroll deductions - an initiative appropriately named "HCWA Cares." Employees select the beneficiaries annually following a utility-wide vote prior to the beginning of each year.
This past year, the "HCWA Cares" campaign provided funding for five local charities, including A Friend's House, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Disabled American Veterans, Operation Lunchbox, and St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Even with these ongoing charitable contributions, HCWA employees still take time to celebrate the holidays by volunteering and taking part in additional acts of kindness.
For example, during this past holiday season the HCWA staff volunteered to collect food for the local Helping in His Name Food Pantry.
In addition, the HCWA Customer Service Department spread the holiday cheer in other ways as well, beginning with their support of Hands for Humanity. Through this departmental effort, these employees assisted students at Locust Grove High School who collected toys and clothing for local homeless children and youth eligible for aid through the federal McKinney-Vento Act. HCWA Customer Service also supported A Friend's House, Inc. in Henry County with the collection of household items, which will continue well into the New Year.
HCWA customers can help fellow citizens in need by enrolling in the Charitable Assistance Program here.
For those HCWA customers in need of financial assistance, a list of the Authority's administrative partners also is available here.
