APTIM's 2026 Environmental Retail Index underscores that major retailers are prioritizing environmental and sustainability efforts that have a strong business case based in compliance, cost savings, and/or resilience.
Retail environmental and sustainability programs are focused on initiatives that support regulatory preparedness, operational efficiency, and risk management. APTIM's 2026 Environmental Retail Index (ERI) uncovers the challenges retailers face in implementing environmental initiatives and highlights opportunities to improve performance across corporate, stores, and supply chains.
The annual benchmarking survey examines practices among major retailers with national and international footprints, covering topics like energy and greenhouse gases, resilience, waste, water, and supply chain management. These findings provide insight into how retailers are managing environmental commitments alongside financial and operational considerations. They also highlight the challenges of translating corporate objectives into consistent and effective practices across individual facilities, where available resources, regulations, employee participation, and local conditions can influence results.
Survey participants identified implementation costs and limited capital as the leading barriers to sustainability initiatives. Despite these constraints, participants reported benefits of reduced resource consumption, improved facilities management, and greater employee satisfaction.
For retailers, the challenge is determining which initiatives warrant investment when available capital and limited headcount cannot accommodate every environmental objective. This requires an assessment of potential costs and benefits, which often results in prioritizing those that support regulatory obligations, have low implementation costs (and produce cost savings), and offer reliable operational benefits.
These decisions become more complicated across large retail portfolios. An initiative that is practical at one location may face different infrastructure, regulations, staffing, or other market-related constraints elsewhere. Accommodating these differences through a cohesive and efficient strategy requires retailers to discern which improvements are cost-effective to implement broadly and which should be considered on a bespoke, local basis.
Reported benefits demonstrate that this cost-benefit analysis for environmental investments should consider more than just upfront costs. Reduced resource consumption, improved facilities management, and employee satisfaction represent different forms of operational value that organizations should factor into investment priorities.
The 2026 ERI survey results also highlight developments across corporate and facility-level environmental programs, such as:
The findings reveal a distinction between corporate-level environmental commitments and the practical requirements of implementing programs across individual retail locations and the supply chain.

For retailers planning their next steps, ERI identifies opportunities to strengthen data management, expand supplier engagement, and improve implementation at individual facilities. The findings provide a basis for examining where existing practices may fall short of organizational objectives and which improvements deserve closer evaluation.
