March Volunteer of the Month – Raegan Smith

Raegan Smith, a junior at Hickman High School, has been volunteering with the City of Columbia since May 2025 and has already made a meaningful impact.

Raegan has volunteered with Youth in Action, recycling education and events, and Household Hazardous Waste collections, and has also been a frequent Litter Team lead.

She actively supports environmental care while encouraging others-especially young people-to engage with their community.

Raegan is deeply passionate about access to education, particularly in underserved communities. She discovered Volunteer Columbia online and was drawn to the opportunity to meet new people while making a positive difference in her city.

Since beginning her volunteer journey, Raegan has gained valuable skills and perspective. She has become more empathetic and aware of local issues, while also strengthening her leadership and teamwork abilities.

One of her most meaningful discoveries has been a love for working with kids, an experience that has helped shape her future goals. She encourages other young people to volunteer, noting that it helps build connections and awareness of their city.

Having moved back to Columbia from Oklahoma nearly six years ago, Raegan appreciates the city's unique sense of community. One of her favorite local spots is Cooper's Landing, where she enjoys spending time with friends and listening to local bands. Outside of volunteering, she is an avid animal lover and shares her home with four dogs.

Looking ahead, Raegan hopes to become a pediatric surgeon and plans to pursue the University of Missouri-Kansas City Bachelor of Arts/Doctor of Medicine program after high school.
