PACE Spotlight: Manuel “Manny” Solf Cardenas

Manny Cardenas is part of Pathways to Career Excellence Group 50.

Why did you want to take part in PACE?

I first applied to PACE when I was working in DLA Distribution. Although I wasn't selected then, I was later inspired by reading another person's PACE spotlight and decided to apply again while I was at DLA Land and Maritime. The most challenging part of the process was making the final decision and taking the leap of faith to move all the way from Hawaii to Michigan to start this new chapter.

Tell us about your career before your PACE selection. For example, any military service or previous DLA roles?

I began my career in the Marine Corps at age 17 and later served with the Department of War and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Most recently, I was a purchasing agent with DLA Land and Maritime at Pearl Harbor, where I supported procurement operations and coordinated closely with the shipyard. I also supported the VA's Business Procurement team in Honolulu, helping to secure critically needed personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What do you appreciate about PACE so far?

I appreciate the mentorship, guidance, and the safe environment to grow. Having been raised by a single mother, I didn't have much fatherly guidance outside of what I learned from my leaders in the Marine Corps. Forming professional relationships with mentors here has given me a lot of great perspective. I am grateful for this, as I know I'm still young and have so much to learn, both in my career and in life.

What is your most memorable moment in the program and why does it stand out for you?

My most memorable moment is the connection I formed with my cohort, PACE Group 50. They became like a second family to me when I first arrived in Michigan. I won't ever forget the bonds we created and how they welcomed me. I also valued the site visits, seeing firsthand how our work connects directly to the warfighter, and having the opportunity to shadow senior leadership.

What advice would you give to someone just beginning their PACE journey?

If you're moving from a warm place like Hawaii to Michigan, pack a heavy coat and prepare for the cold! Beyond the weather, my best advice is to come with an eagerness to learn, a positive attitude, and a little faith that things will work out, even when it doesn't seem like it. Everyone has their own unique journey, and I wish them the best on theirs.

How can a participant succeed and thrive in PACE?

To succeed, be open to feedback, however hard it may be to hear. It's important not to take things personally, but instead to listen and adjust. There were many times when I had to take a step back and listen to my peers and supervisors to make necessary changes for my own growth.

In a nutshell, how would you describe the benefit of PACE to a potential applicant?

The number one benefit is career growth, but another key benefit is personal growth. The program pushed me out of my comfort zone, especially with public speaking and presentations. Developing these communication skills takes time, but it is necessary to become an effective future leader.

Where will you be assigned for your second year of PACE and what are you looking forward to in that phase of the program?

I will be assigned to Operational Contracting in Battle Creek for my second year. I'm really looking forward to learning the specifics of my job and being able to contribute to the team's mission.

Looking beyond PACE, what are your future DLA and lifetime career goals?

I want to continue mastering the contracting field to grow my career within DLA. Long term, I hope to take on a rotational assignment overseas to expand my operational experience and prepare myself for positions of greater responsibility.

Anything you'd like to share about your life outside of work? (Hobbies, interests, family, etc.)

Outside of work, I enjoy Latin dancing (salsa, bachata, etc.), hiking, traveling, and spending quality time with friends and family. I'm always open to trying new things and exploring new places!

The Pathways to Career Excellence Program for DLA Disposition Services is a two-year program educating PACERS on the full scope of organizational business processes and the various directorates. The first year takes place at major subordinate command headquarters in Michigan, with a second year either in Battle Creek for Contracting trainees or at field sites for property disposal personnel. PACERS begin training as General Schedule 7 employees, promote to GS-9 at the end of their first year, and graduate the program as GS-11s. There are multiple pathways to becoming a PACER, including through DLA internal selection, recent graduates, or candidates coming directly from active military service.
