FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 18, 2026
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Today, at approximately 4:05 a.m., two Alexandria Police officers responded to an apartment complex at 27 Canterbury Square for the report of a woman being shot.
Upon arrival, officers safely removed all persons from the residence except for the subject and the victim.
While inside the apartment, officers encountered an adult male suspect who had barricaded himself inside a room where officers believed the female victim was located. After refusing officers' commands, the suspect charged at the officers. During the encounter, two officers discharged their service weapons.
Officers rendered life-saving measures to both the male suspect and female victim; however, both individuals were pronounced deceased on scene.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death.
The officers involved are currently on administrative leave, consistent with department policy. Collectively, the officers have seven and a half years of service with the Alexandria Police Department.
Pursuant to department policy, the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is conducting an investigation into the critical incident. The CIRT was established by Northern Virginia jurisdictions in 2021 to investigate critical incidents involving law enforcement officers. Upon completion of its investigation, CIRT may present evidence to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office or other appropriate prosecutorial authority for review.
In accordance with department protocol, the Alexandria Police Department's Office of Professional Responsibility will conduct a separate administrative inquiry. That inquiry will be monitored by the Office of the Alexandria Independent Policing Auditor, which will also coordinate review of the investigation with the Independent Police Review Board.
This remains an active and evolving investigation, and additional information will be released as appropriate.
