Urgent need to support livestock farmers due to foot-and-mouth disease

Urgent need to support livestock farmers due to foot-and-mouth disease

27.3.2026

Question for written answer E-001295/2026
to the Commission
Rule 144
Loucas Fourlas (PPE)

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious animal disease, with serious implications for both animal health and the security of the food supply chain. Farmers are once again being asked to deal with considerable risk, often without adequate means of prevention and without the necessary economic shielding.

In view of the above, can the Commission answer the following:

  • 1.What immediate measures is it taking to strengthen disease prevention and surveillance in Member States, especially in high-risk areas?
  • 2.Does it intend to activate specific financial support mechanisms for affected livestock farmers, either through compensation or exceptional aid, to ensure that the profession remains viable?
