Mayor Bowser to Celebrate Modernization of Harriet Tubman Elementary School

(Washington, DC) - On Monday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser, leaders from the DC Department of General Services (DGS) and DC Public Schools (DCPS), students, and community members will celebrate the completion of the $91 million modernization of Harriet Tubman Elementary School in Ward 1, marking Mayor Bowser's final back-to-school ribbon cutting during her tenure as mayor.

During the visit, Mayor Bowser will cut the ribbon on the new 105,000-square-foot school. The new, fully modernized campus honors the school's original design while expanding capacity to more than 600 students. The campus features new playgrounds for early childhood education students and children ages 5 to 12, a gymnasium and auditorium, kitchen and cafeteria, library, music classrooms, and student support spaces. Dedicated special labs also offer flexible space for yoga, enrichment activities, and other student programming.

This modernization is one of eight citywide school modernizations and expansions completed for School Year 2026-2027. Since 2015, the District has invested $261 million in Ward 1 school projects.
