October 2024: Polish American Heritage Month

WHEREAS, October marks the month the first Polish settlers arrived in Jamestown, Virginia; and,

WHEREAS, during the 20^th century, millions of Poles immigrated to the United States, building churches, and schools, and establishing community organizations; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to over 850,000 Polish Americans, making it the state with the third-largest Polish population in the country, with significant Polish communities thriving in cities such as Detroit, Hamtramck, Grand Rapids, Bay City, Alpena, Jackson, Saginaw, and beyond; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to over 850,000 Polish Americans, making it the state with the third-highest Polish population in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, Polish Americans have made significant contributions to the fields of education, art, science, business, government, technology, the culinary industry, and so much more; and,

WHEREAS, Michiganders and visitors alike can experience Polish American culture through local restaurants, churches, cultural centers, polka festivals, and more throughout Michigan; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we recognize the impact Polish Americans have made on Michigan and the United States and celebrate the special culture and heritage of Polish Michiganders;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2024 as Polish American Heritage Month in Michigan.
