A new programme aimed at finding and growing innovative accessibility solutions has been launched today.
The Ministry of Disabled People - Whaikaha, in partnership with Creative HQ, is seeking applications from across New Zealand for the Access Activator pilot programme.
Ideas should improve access for Deaf and disabled people, Turi Māori, tāngata whaikaha Māori and their whānau. Transport, digital services, the built environment and emergency management are key areas of focus.
Successful applicants will be supported and mentored, helping to bring their ideas to fruition so that they can be implemented.
"This is going to be an opportunity to receive terrific accessibility solutions from across New Zealand," said Rebecca Elvy, Deputy Chief Executive Outreach and Innovation at Whaikaha.
"Great ideas can come from anywhere, and we can't wait to see who applies.
"We have high hopes for this pilot programme, especially given the knowledge and insight held by our country's Deaf and disabled communities."
Funding ranges from $25,000 to $100,000. Successful applicants receive mentoring and project support through May to June 2026, with a late June progress showcase.
We invite disabled-led groups and collectives, Māori organisations and iwi entities, NGOs, social enterprises, startups/SMEs, and partnerships that combine lived experience with delivery capability.
Individuals can apply with a fundholder (a legal entity that holds the grant).
Private companies can apply if they are a legal entity and meet contracting requirements.
Full details on the funding and how to apply is available on the Access Activator webpage
