The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) recently awarded $650,000 to the City of Fort Worth to help fund two veteran-related programs: Healthy Homes for Heroes and Forward Home.
Healthy Homes for Heroes (H4H), which received a $300,000 grant, provides home repair and modifications for low- and moderate-income single-family homeowners who are unable to make necessary repairs to their homes.
H4H serves owner-occupied, single-family housing units. The homeowner must be a veteran or the surviving spouse, and the housing units must be the applicant's homestead. Under the program, repairs are completed at no cost to the homeowner; the maximum award is $20,000.
Forward Home, awarded a $350,000 grant, provides utility and rental/mortgage assistance to qualifying low-income veterans and their families. Preference is given to veterans over active service members. Qualifications: Applicants must be a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran, have a household income at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI), and be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
Funding for TVC grants primarily comes from Texas Lottery scratch-off tickets, which are labeled at the bottom with "Supporting Texas Veterans."
