Rep. Burchett introduces No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 10, 2025) - This week, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) introduced the No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act.

"There's been a lot of work done on this bill and I couldn't have raised the issue without the help of Shawn Ryan and Legend. This legislation has been sat on long enough. I look forward to working it through both chambers and getting it to President Trump's desk as quickly possible." Said Rep. Burchett.

BACKGROUND: In December of 2023, Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02)introduced H.R. 6586, to oppose financial and material support from going to the Taliban.

While working on H.R. 6586, it was brought to our attention that weekly cash shipments of around $40 million USDwere being sent to the Afghanistan Central Bank. Additionally, after a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committeewith Secretary of State Antony Blinken in December of 2024 Secretary Blinken admitted that around $10 million had been paid to the Taliban in the form of taxes. H.R. 6586passed unanimously through both the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House of Representatives. Unfortunately, then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer refused to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.

H.R. 260improves on H.R. 6586and would:

  • Force the State Department to develop and implement a policy to oppose any foreign aid from going to the Taliban.
  • Require a report on any cash assistance programs in Afghanistan and how the U.S. keeps the Taliban from accessing that.
  • Require a report on the Afghan Fund and the Afghanistan Central Bank.
