Snap, TikTok, DoorDash, Netflix: Exploring 2024 in Data

Every day, the world generates a dizzying amount of data. If you've followed Domo on Data, you know this-we've covered everything from the Summer Olympics and March Madness to Halloween costumes and Taylor Swift.

What's more, the way we interact with this data changes, too. Each year, Domo publishes Data Never Sleeps, which captures these changes. It's a snapshot of how digital habits manifest minute by minute.

From streaming to shopping to the workplace, this year's infographic captures the immensity of just how much data gets generated online every 60 seconds. You can catch the complete Data Never Sleeps 12.0 report here -but we couldn't let the moment pass without a little extra analysis from your resident data nerds.

How we built our Data Never Sleeps 12.0 app

You can jump to the Data Never Sleeps app here. But first, a moment for the report's methodology. To construct the infographic, our team pulled 2024 data from first-party sources, such as DoorDash and Hootsuite, as well as third-party outlets like PR Newswire.

To create the Domo app below, I used App Studio-our toolkit for building cool things with your own data, low-code style. I'll admit, design isn't usually my thing, but App Studio makes it easy to care about the details without a heavy lift. For instance, I used Themes to pull colors directly from the infographic using the little eyedropper icon. One quick click, and the app's visuals now perfectly match the report. Simple and seamless, even for someone like me.

New categories added, dropped, or changed in 2024

In: TikTok. Out: Threads

Last year, we tracked Threads because the Instagram-launched app made a big splash in the summer of 2023. This year, we dropped it and focused on TikTok instead. We also cut X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp and added Snap, Fortnite, and Text (text messages).

Facebook and Instagram

This year, we combined Facebook and Instagram into one category and focused on Reels, which got nearly 139 million plays each minute in 2024.

Workplace tools

This year, we added categories for things you might use in your workplace: Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack, and Google Gemini. We kept LinkedIn year over year, and we're glad we did, because the change year over year was sharp.

In 2023, 6,060 users submitted a resume every minute. In 2024, 9,000 members applied for a job in the same timeframe. "Submit a resume" isn't precisely the same metric as "apply for a job." Still, we're confident in saying that's an increase.

Spotlight on DoorDash and Netflix

You'll notice we built cards to focus on two categories we've been tracking for years-ones that we think reveal something interesting about our economy.

Take a look at the card below "Dollars spent on DoorDash"-it's the second-to-last visual. In Data Never Sleeps 10.0, we tracked diners placing $76,389 worth of orders every minute on the delivery app. That stat ballooned in Data Never Sleeps 11.0, all the way up to $122,785, just one year later.

Another spike we noticed when comparing Data Never Sleeps over the years is captured in "Hours streamed on Netflix." In 2018, it was 97,222-as in, that's the number of hours watched each minute. 2019 saw a sixfold jump to almost 700,000 hours.

This was the golden age before seemingly every studio launched a streaming service between late 2019 and early 2020: Paramount+, Disney+, Discovery+, and Apple TV-and (we believe) pulled Netflix's numbers back down.

Last, make sure you check out the section "All Items by Year." You can see all the categories tracked across all twelve years of Data Never Sleeps.
