The City of Independence has selected Troy Anderson to be the next City Manager following a months-long national search. Anderson will begin in the role on April 13.
Bringing more than 20 years of municipal government experience in the Midwest, Anderson's background in planning, economic development, and community partnerships will further the City's priority to build on its current momentum and continue moving Independence forward.
"Independence feels like home," said Anderson. "From the City's rich history to its many assets and significant projects underway, Independence is primed for real growth in the years ahead. I'm excited to be part of what's coming next."
The City's nationwide search drew a strong pool of 36 applicants from 17 states, including Missouri. After a thorough review process, the City Council selected four finalists for interviews, community engagement, and evaluation. Anderson emerged as the top choice, with his formal appointment scheduled for the March 16 City Council meeting.
"Troy is the right choice at the right time," Mayor Rory Rowland said. "Independence is turning plans into progress across every part of our community, and his experience gives us exactly the kind of steady, capable leadership needed to carry that work forward."
Anderson currently serves as Assistant City Manager for the City of Wichita, a role he has held since 2022. During his tenure, he has helped guide the city's annual $750+ million budget and a 10-year Capital Improvement Program totaling more than $3 billion. His work includes major development initiatives, public-private partnership negotiations, and regional collaboration to support business attraction, workforce development, and commercial area revitalization.
"We are at a turning point as a city," said Council Member At-Large Bridget McCandless, Chair of the City Manager Recruitment Committee. "We have momentum economically, structurally, and in our neighborhoods. Troy's track record in planning and redevelopment will help us turn this momentum into lasting growth."
As City Manager, Anderson will oversee the City's day-to-day operations, lead a workforce of more than 1,000 employees, and work closely with the Independence City Council to carry out policy, maintain long-term fiscal health, and ensure high-quality public services.
About the Search Process
The City partnered with SGR, a national executive search firm specializing in local government recruitment, to develop the candidate profile, qualifications, and evaluation criteria. These materials incorporate input from the City Council, staff, and community stakeholders.
36qualified applicants were reviewed. Semifinal interviews took place in January, followed by finalist interviews and a public meet-and-greet at the Independence Uptown Market in March.
Interim City Manager Lisa Reynolds has served in the role since October 2025 and will transition back to her position as Deputy City Manager when Anderson begins in April.
