Educators: Partner with SMWD to Engage Your Students

At Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD), we're big fans of inspiring the next generation - and we'd love to partner with you to bring water education to life for your students.

We've created exciting, standards-aligned programs for K-12 students that make learning about water, sustainability, and our local environment meaningful and fun. Best of all? We handle the planning and costs, so all you have to do is jump in and enjoy the experience with your class.

Here's what we offer:

  • Behind-the-Scenes Tours
Let's take your students on an adventure! We offer guided infrastructure tours, complete with bus transportation, to our local reservoirs and facilities. Students will get a close-up look at where their water comes from and hear directly from the experts who make it all happen.
  • Classroom Presentations or Field Trips to SMWD
We'll come to you - or you can visit us! Our interactive lessons (available in 60 or 120-minute sessions) are designed to keep students engaged while learning important concepts about water and the environment.
  • In-Class Lesson Series
Want to dive deeper? We offer a series of lessons that can be delivered in-person or virtually. These hands-on sessions blend real-world water issues with critical thinking - and they're a hit with students and teachers alike.

Why Teachers and Students Love these Programs:

  • It's Free and Fully Aligned with California Standards
We've got the curriculum covered - everything is designed to meet California content standards, so your students can learn about water while staying on track academically.
  • It's Engaging and Interactive
From hands-on activities to live demonstrations, our programs bring science and sustainability to life in a way that sticks with students long after the lesson ends.
  • It's Connected to Their World
Students learn about local water sources, the challenges we face as a community, and why it's so important to use water wisely. It's learning with real-life impact.
  • It's Flexible
Whether your classroom is virtual, in-person, or somewhere in between, we've got options to make sure water education works for you.
