Museum of the Rockies to celebrate National Fossil Day on Oct. 10

BOZEMAN - The Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University will celebrate National Fossil Day with family-friendly activities, demonstrations and talks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

Visitors can explore the museum with a fossil passport and stop by four activity tables. MSU's Dead Lizard Society will demonstrate how a fossil is made, and the museum will illustrate what scientists can learn by examining fossils under a microscope. Visitors can also look at fossils in the museum's collections and analyze the differences between lizards and dinosaurs. Participants who complete the passport can earn a prize.

Talks for visitors of all ages will include:

  • "Montana: Where the Dinosaurs Roam" at 10:30 a.m. with curator of paleontology John Scannella
  • "From Dirt to Display: The Science of Fossil Preparation" at 11:30 a.m. with paleontology lab manager Cassi Knight
  • "Theropod Dinosaurs: T. rex, Ostriches and Ostrich Mimics" at 12:30 p.m. with paleontology master's student Jaden Blackburn
  • "Horned Dinosaurs: Beyond Triceratops" at 1:30 p.m. with paleontology master's student Kari Myhran
