Former U.S. Sailor Sentenced to 60 Months in Prison

Stephen Condreay received explicit photographs of a minor victim

LANSING, MICHIGAN - U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Timothy VerHey today announced that Stephen Condreay, 22, of Braidwood, IL, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for receiving child pornography and was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal. During the sentencing hearing, Chief U.S. District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou emphasized the serious nature of Condreay's crimes and the need to protect the public as reasons for the sentence.

Condreay, while an enlisted member of the United States Navy, created a fake Snapchat profile and received explicit photographs from an eleven-year-old victim.

U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey said he was satisfied with the sentence. "Condreay somehow did not hear the message that people who sexually exploit our children will pay with prison time. He will now have five years to commit it to memory. I appreciate the work that was done by HSI and the Michigan State Police to bring this case to justice."

"Those entrusted to serve our country are held to the highest standards of conduct," said HSI Detroit acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Larson. "This sentence holds the defendant accountable for serious crimes involving the exploitation of children. HSI remains steadfast in its commitment to identify and investigate those who seek to harm children, regardless of their position or status, and we are grateful for the critical partnership of HSI Hartford and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in this case."

The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Sault Ste. Marie office and the Michigan State Police investigated the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys' Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
