Sahel: RSF launches 'Sahel Kunafoni,' a webinar series defending the right to information across the region
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is hosting the first edition of its new webinar series "Sahel Kunafoni" on Thursday, 30 July. Held every month, the series will bring together journalists and media stakeholders from across the Sahel region of Africa to foster dialogue and strengthen the resilience of the region's media ecosystem.
Journalists have been killed and taken hostage by armed groups in Mali, abducted and forcibly conscripted into the army in Burkina Faso and arbitrarily detained in Niger. Across the Sahel, national and foreign media outlets have been suspended or closed, and the spread of disinformation continues. Press freedom and the right to reliable information in the region are facing growing, multifaceted threats.
To address this, RSF is launching "Sahel Kunafoni," a monthly webinar series bringing together media professionals and stakeholders from across the region to debate key issues, share expertise and develop concrete responses to the challenges facing journalism. Discussions will cover issues such as access to information, countering propaganda and disinformation, environmental journalism, journalists in exile, restrictive legislation and local initiatives that help strengthen journalists' safety.
"As attacks on the right to information continue to intensify across the Sahel, it is essential to create spaces where journalists can share their experiences, exchange analysis and collectively develop responses to the challenges they face. Through 'Sahel Kunafoni,' RSF is reaffirming its commitment to protecting journalists in the Sahel by strengthening regional solidarity and fostering initiatives that enable media outlets and journalists to continue informing the public safely.

The first webinar, dedicated to journalists reporting from exile, will take place on 30 July at 4 p.m. GMT. It will bring together journalists, civil society representatives and development partners from across the region.
