Wilmington, DE -Delaware's Congresswoman Sarah McBride released the following statement after an immigration judge handed down an order last week to deport Victor Acurio Suárez, a disabled Sussex County resident.
"The detainment and now the order to deport Victor Acurio Suárez is morally bankrupt. It shows a complete lack of care, compassion, and basic humanity toward a vulnerable neighbor who has done everything the law asked of him and poses no threat to anyone.
"Victor lives with significant developmental disabilities and depends on his family for daily care. He fled Ecuador after being brutally beaten at the hands of the Los Lobos gang, where they 'left him for dead' after setting his house on fire.
"He has no criminal history and followed the law by applying for asylum upon arriving in our country. He is the exact kind of individual that our asylum system is meant to protect. Forcing him back to a country where he was brutally attacked and left for dead is wrong. It's also a stark warning about what happens when our systems abandon empathy altogether.
"The Trump Administration has stripped our immigration system of dignity and due process-foundations on which a just system relies. These are not privileges, they are obligations, and they exist to protect us all from the treatment Mr. Acurio Suárez is facing now.
"I am calling on immigration authorities to immediately release Mr. Acurio Suárez and grant him asylum."
Mr. Victor Acurio Suárez intends to pursue an appeal to this decision. The Office of Representative McBride has been working with Mr. Victor Acurio Suárez's lawyer since his detainment in October of 2025.
