City of Pompano Beach Announces Upcoming McNab Road Bridge Closure as Part of Major Streetscape and Replacement Project

The City of Pompano Beach is moving forward with a critical phase of the McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project, a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to enhance safety, connectivity, and resilience along one of the community's most vital corridors.

McNab Road, a key east-west route connecting neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and community spaces, has long served as an essential link within the city. The existing bridge, originally constructed in 1959, has reached the end of its useful life and has been identified as functionally obsolete. Its replacement is a top priority under the voter-approved 2018 "G.O. Pompano!" Bond program, which funds high-impact projects focused on public safety, parks and recreation, and infrastructure improvements.

"This project represents a major investment in the future of Pompano Beach," said Mayor Rex Hardin. "By replacing aging infrastructure and creating a safer, more accessible corridor for everyone, we are not only improving daily life for our residents, but also strengthening our City's connectivity and economic vitality for decades to come."

Project Overview
The project spans McNab Road from South Cypress Road to Federal Highway and includes comprehensive upgrades to modernize aging infrastructure and improve mobility for all users. Guided by extensive community input, the project addresses long-standing challenges such as narrow sidewalks, outdated utilities, and flooding concerns.

Key improvements include:

  • ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps
  • Road resurfacing, enhanced lighting, and upgraded drainage systems
  • New pedestrian and bicycle facilities
  • Improved bus stops and shelters
  • Utility infrastructure enhancements
  • Full bridge replacement to improve safety, resiliency, and navigability
  • Landscaping enhancements to promote walkability and visual cohesion

Construction Progress and Upcoming Closure
Significant progress has already been made on the streetscape portion of the project. To date:

  • Utility installations, including stormwater, water, wastewater, and gas systems, are substantially complete
  • New concrete curbs and sidewalks are approximately 90% complete
  • Florida Power & Light conduit and pole installations are approximately 80% complete

The next major phase will begin on April 13, 2026, when the bridge will be fully closed to allow for demolition and reconstruction. This temporary closure is strategically scheduled to minimize disruption ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.

The bridge is expected to reopen on October 1, 2026.

During this period:

  • The bridge will be closed to all vehicular, pedestrian, and marine traffic
  • The waterway beneath the bridge will also be closed to navigation
  • Local access for residents, businesses, transit, and essential services will be maintained via designated routes
  • Through-traffic will be redirected along a clearly marked detour

Long-Term Community Benefits
This Complete Streets project will deliver lasting benefits that extend well beyond infrastructure improvements, including:

  • Enhanced Safety and Accessibility: Safer travel for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users, including those with disabilities
  • Improved Connectivity: Stronger links between homes, schools, parks, and commercial areas
  • Economic Growth: Increased attractiveness for businesses and investment due to improved mobility and accessibility
  • Modern Infrastructure: A new bridge designed to last more than 75 years, reducing long-term maintenance costs
  • Better Navigation: Increased vertical and horizontal clearances for improved marine access and safety
  • Neighborhood Enhancement: Improved aesthetics and potential positive impacts on property values

The McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project reflects the City's continued commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports a safer, more connected, and more vibrant community.
