MaineGeneral is pleased to announce the graduation of eight students in its Medical Assistant (MA) Earn to Learn program, Friday, Dec. 19 at the Thayer Center for Health.
The MaineGeneral MA Earn to Learn program is not only tuition-free but pays students during the course time. Students complete comprehensive classroom and skills training with hands-on clinical experiences. Upon completion of the program and passing of the Certified Medical Assistant exam administered by the National HealthCare Association (NHA), students have the opportunity to secure a position with MaineGeneral.
Graduate Emma Gilhuly had previously graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and worked as a pharmacy tech. She chose to participate in the MA Earn to Learn program to be more involved in health care.
"The MaineGeneral MA Earn to Learn program is an extraordinary opportunity to advance my career," said Gilhuly "My classmates and I were able to challenge each other to be successful. We formed bonds with the clinical and administrative staff that we trained with and even formed bonds with some of our patients."
Gilhuly is now focused on being the best medical assistant she can be, with plans to apply to medical school.
Graduate Serena Linsky spoke to her fellow classmates' acceptance of MaineGeneral positions at Elmwood Primary Care, Waterville Pediatrics, the Family Medicine Institute and her own at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Augusta.
"Through these 13 weeks, we learned what we were capable of," said Linsky.
This year's complete list of graduates includes Ryan Bourque, Hunter Gagne, Emma Gilhuly, Valerie LaBelle, Serena Linsky, Taliyah Martinez-Albee, Kaitlyn Sharples and Lindsay Thompson.
