Salt Lake City, UT - Today, Rep. Blake Moore voted to advance the House Ways and Means Committee's budget reconciliation proposal, which included drastic cuts to clean energy, vehicles, and manufacturing project tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to fund tax breaks for Trump and his billionaire friends.
Since its passage in 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act's clean energy tax credits have bolstered projects that reduce pollution, lower costs, and improve public health. The tax credits also paved the way for a historic manufacturing boomin the U.S., with energy companies investing $89 billion-a 305 percent increase from pre-IRA investments-in the sector.
These investments are already paying off. In Utah, the IRA has helped bring on more than 3,900 jobsto the state since June 2024, with projections topping 8,700 jobsby 2030. The credits have supported innovative projects across Utah, from geothermal and solar installations in local school districts - saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in electricity costs - to utility-scale infrastructure that puts the state on the map as a national clean energy leader. In Beaver County, construction is underway on Cape Station, which is set to become the largest advanced geothermal power plant in the world. In Emery County, the Green River Energy Center will soon be the country's largest solar-plus-storage facility.
These ground breaking efforts, largely made possible by IRA tax credits, are now at risk due to Rep. Moore's vote, and stand to be lost.
In response, Sierra Club Utah's Lead Organizer on Climate and Energy, Rebekah Ashley, issued the following statement:
"Representative Moore's vote is deeply disappointing, and does a disservice to Utahns. It blocks economic opportunity, puts good-paying jobs out of reach, and makes it harder for families to afford home energy upgrades that lower monthly bills and improve quality of life. These clean energy tax credits have supported some of Utah's most exciting and forward looking projects, but by voting to rollback these investments, Rep. Moore is turning his back on the clean energy future that Utahns deserve - siding with a volatile fossil fuel industry whose rising costs continue to impact Utah families."
