Traffic Advisory: A safer, smoother street is coming to SW Sixth Avenue from SW Sheridan to SW Broadway

(Oct. 20, 2025) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is repairing and repaving SW Sixth Avenue from SW Sheridan St to SW Broadway. The work is expected to conclude on Thursday, Oct. 23.

Maintenance crews will work from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on business days and possibly weekends.

As with all paving projects, PBOT is looking to improve transportation safety and access. After paving on SW Sixth Avenue, PBOT plans to re-stripe the travel lanes to make conditions safer. The project will create safer bike lanes on SW Sixth Avenue from SW Caruthers St to SW Broadway by increasing bike lane width and adding 2.5-foot painted buffers.

The new vehicle travel lanes will generally match SW Sixth Avenue to the north and south of this section.

After paving on SW Sixth Avenue, PBOT plans to re-stripe the travel lanes to make conditions safer. The project will create safer bike lanes on SW Sixth Avenue from SW Caruthers St to SW Broadway by increasing bike lane width and adding buffers.

The new vehicle travel lanes will generally match SW 6th Avenue to the north and south of this section.

Expect rough roads, and traffic delays with detours set up, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with some weekend work. This may limit access, at times, for people traveling in the area. Parking will be restricted 1-2 days before crews begin and throughout the repairs.

Pedestrian access will remain open.

Expect dust, noise, vibrations, and heavy equipment on SW Sixth Ave and side streets.

This work is funded by Fixing Our Streets, the 10-cent per gallon gas tax overwhelmingly renewed by voters in May 2024. Fixing Our Streets paving dollars are focused on preventive maintenance like grind-and-inlay and sealing treatments that preserve and extend the life of our roads.
