EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement ahead of the 60th Presidential Inaugural Ceremony:
"Today, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the federal holiday that honors the life and legacy of the American civil rights icon. It was Dr. King who presented us with a vision of a world where justice and love triumph over bigotry and hate. In his honor, I will be participating in several justice-based activities in and around the Chicago community.
"Dr. King famously said, 'Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love will do that.' Let us all follow the wisdom of Dr. King and strive for love and unity, and be guided by the principles of equality, integrity, courage, empathy, and freedom for all.
"Although I will not be attending the inauguration today, I truly wish President-elect Donald Trump success because I want America to succeed and our democracy to prevail. I stand ready to push back on any policy proposed that attacks our freedoms, cuts lifesaving government programs and benefits, or threatens our democracy.
"To all those in the 9th Congressional District, I can assure you that you have got a fighter on your side. The fight for equal rights for all, an economy that works for everyone, not just the rich, reproductive rights, Social Security and Medicare, environmental protection, and so much more goes on. We must keep the faith."
