Ball State University's Arts Alive! series continues with an on-campus presentation followed by a Q&A with artist Jeffrey Gibson at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Pruis Hall. The event will conclude with a reception and light refreshments.
This special lecture is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the New York Parking Garage (located east of Pruis Hall, off New York Avenue), and is free after 7 p.m.
Jeffrey Gibson is a multidisciplinary artist and a citizen of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent. His work spans sculpture, painting, printmaking, video, and performance. He lives and works in New York and is currently an artist-in-residence at Bard College.
"We are honored to welcome Jeffrey Gibson to Ball State University as part of our Arts Alive series," said Dr. Seth Beckman, dean of Ball State's College of Fine Arts. "His work challenges conventions, celebrates identity, and expands our understanding of what contemporary art can be. Having an artist of his caliber engage with our campus is an extraordinary opportunity for our students and community."
Mr. Gibson earned his master's degree in painting at the Royal College of Art in London and his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is held in the permanent collections of several major institutions, including the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is a past TED Foundation Fellow, a Joan Mitchell Grant recipient, and a 2019 MacArthur Foundation Fellow.
Arts Alive! aims to make arts and entertainment more accessible to students and the surrounding community. The series includes events from Ball State's David Owsley Museum of Art, Emens Auditorium, the School of Art, the School of Music, and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
