Is PayPal Stock Ready For A Year Of Higher Spending

On October 27, 2026, PayPal (PYPL) raised its 2026 forecast for adjusted earnings per share to $5.60 from $5.38. During the company's earnings call that day, management said PayPal plans to invest further in 2027. Executives intend to invest in operating expenses and spend transaction margin dollars, which are the profit PayPal keeps after covering the costs of each payment. For a shareholder, these investments compete with the profit that funds PayPal's buybacks. So how much of PayPal's profit could a costlier 2027 take?

What Higher Spending Would Cost PayPal

If PayPal reinvested all of the cost savings it expects by the end of 2026, that money would equal at least 11% of the $6.35 billion in operating income it earned in the four quarters to September 30, 2026. Management expects those cost cuts to reach an annual run rate of more than $700 million by the end of 2026, and said it intends to reinvest a significant portion of that money. That 11% assumes PayPal reinvests all of the savings, so the share it actually puts back is likely smaller. It excludes the transaction margin dollars management also plans to invest in 2027.

PayPal's incentive spending is already visible in its revenue. The company's revenue grew 2.0% in fiscal Q3 2026, compared with 7.3% in the same quarter a year earlier. Management said higher contra revenue investments, which are incentives booked as a cut to revenue, partially held that growth back, alongside the EU's removal of a tax exemption on low-value imports.

Management also said it underwrites its branded checkout investments to about a two- to three-year horizon, noting that the savings and the new spending will not align quarter by quarter. PayPal plans to direct this money into areas such as financial services and specialized sales teams.

What PayPal Has To Absorb The Spending

PayPal generated $6.3 billion of free cash flow in the four quarters to September 30, 2026, and spent $6.05 billion of it repurchasing its own shares. With almost all of that cash funding buybacks, the pace of those repurchases, rather than the debt, looks like what a costlier year would affect first.

PayPal's net debt is small relative to that cash flow. At the end of September, its debt exceeded its cash and short-term investments by $3.19 billion, equal to about half of a year's free cash flow. Counting its longer-term investments as well, PayPal's $15.1 billion of cash and investments exceeds its debt. Operating income covered interest expense 13.1 times over the same four quarters. Management's 2026 guide still includes about $6 billion of share repurchases, alongside at least $6.5 billion of adjusted free cash flow, which is management's own measure.

That cushion matters most when markets squeeze. Cash over debt is rule one for a crash and a rally.

When PayPal Will Put Numbers On 2027

PayPal is expected to report its fiscal Q4 2026 results in February 2027. Management said it will provide its 2027 guidance during that earnings call. For now, the company's target is 2027 adjusted earnings per share growth similar to 2026's. Management set that target alongside its plan to invest further in 2027, so the spending is meant to fit within it. For the fourth quarter, management guided non-transaction operating expenses to grow between flat and low single digits. The growth in those expenses and the 2027 earnings guide are the figures to watch in PayPal's February 2027 report.
