Waynesburg U. Theater Department Premieres “Godspell”

The Waynesburg University Theater Department premiered their newest production, "Godspell," on Wednesday, March 25. The musical will run until Saturday, March 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m. each evening.

General admission is $5, and students and employees of the University will be given a discount of $3 upon showing their ID at the door.

Originally written by Stephen Schwartz, the writer of "Wicked," and based on the Gospel of Matthew, the musical portrays a group of people forming a community and teaching the parables of Jesus Christ through song and dance, before culminating in his crucifixion.

"With Christ, it's like you forget that he was a real person, even when you read about it, preach it, and practice it," Director of Theater Productions Ted Watts said. "This production helps us think about what he did and who he was and why people followed him, and what the message actually meant."

Watts has a history with the play, starring as the lead role in three separate productions. During his earliest production of the play, his teacher had worked on one of "Godspell's" first national tours. Watts said his teacher implemented many of the first production's nuances and idiosyncrasies, which he plans to bring into Waynesburg's production.

"I don't think I've ever grown closer to a cast," he said.

Tickets for the show can be purchased at the door or online. Click here to purchase tickets now.
