Sanders-Casar AI Ban Would Sacrifice American Innovation and Competitiveness, Says ITIF

WASHINGTON-In response to the announcement of the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the leading think tank for science and technology policy, issued the following statement from President Daniel Castro:

Banning advances in artificial intelligence would be a profound mistake. More capable AI systems could accelerate medical breakthroughs, advance scientific research, improve productivity, and lower costs for American families. With policymakers focused on affordability, banning one of the most promising technologies for achieving just that makes no sense.Advanced AI presents real questions that policymakers should continue to take seriously, but its benefits are already tangible, while many of the most dire risks remain speculative. Safety research, testing, and security work should proceed alongside the development of increasingly capable AI. The federal government and AI developers are already devoting substantial resources to these efforts, and Congress should continue strengthening them. A sweeping ban on future advances would sacrifice much of that promise based largely on predictions about what AI might become.This legislation would also hand Beijing a strategic advantage: China will not stop developing advanced AI simply because the United States does. Allowing China to gain a decisive lead in the most important general-purpose technology of the coming decades would undermine American economic competitiveness and national security while doing nothing to eliminate the underlying risks.America should lead in advanced AI, not ban it. The United States should make these systems safer while pursuing the enormous opportunities they offer to improve Americans' health, prosperity, and quality of life.
