Kenyan students join Erasmus Plus programmes in Europe

Thirty-four Kenyan students have arrived in Europe this September, after they were awarded the prestigious Erasmus+ scholarship for the 2025 academic year, funded by the European Union (EU).

The European Union Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, hosted the students for a pre-departure reception at the Delegation offices in August 2025. She was joined Dr Carol Hunja, Deputy Principle Secretary from the Ministry of Education, and Carolyne Nekesa, from the National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI). Also in attendance were Ambassadors from the European Union Member States.

During the event, Ambassador Geiger noted, "Most of the students going to Europe will be focusing on technology, engineering, artificial intelligence, environmental sciences or humanitarian response, all highly relevant fields for Kenya. Unfortunately, not many Kenyans are yet aware that Kenyans are also eligible for these Erasmus scholarships, that there are programmes offered in in English in many EU countries, and that it is a fully funded scholarship." She encouraged the students to come back to Kenya upon completion of their studies with motivation and new skills, so that they can continue contributing to the development of Kenya.

The Deputy Principal Secretary from the Ministry of Education, Dr Carol Hunja told the students that she expected them to represent Kenya well during their time in Europe. She said, "Looking at you I am so excited for you, because it's going to be an amazing opportunity. You represent millions of students in the world, who would wish to be in your position, so make the best of it. My proud call to you is that you are our ambassadors, you are leaving as Kenyan ambassadors. We are already looking forwards to your return to the country upon completion, and to add value to our country." Dr Hunja also expressed her gratitude to the European Union for the collaborative efforts and the opportunities created for Kenyans in the higher education sector in Kenya.
