Additional Water Main Flushing Work Set for South Greensboro

Beginning on Wednesday, October 22, the City's Water Resources Department will expand its unidirectional flushing preventative maintenance program by partnering with Hydromax, an outside contractor, to expedite efforts in southern Greensboro. The City schedules areas for flushing using best practices to make the flushing process most effective. The additional work takes place in an area of the city roughly bordered by Merritt Drive on the west, Interstate 40 on the north, Freeman Mill Road on the east, and West Vandalia Road and Creek Ridge Road on the south. City staff will continue ongoing flushing work in adjacent communities. Unidirectional flushing is a planned, preventative-maintenance method the City applies systematically to all of its customers. It improves water quality by removing accumulated sediment from the water main system through a process that involves closing valves to direct water flow to a fire hydrant and flushing that hydrant. While there should be no adverse effects to the supply system and the water remains safe, isolated areas may experience lower pressure and discoloration. City staff monitors water quality and pressure throughout the process.

What to Expect:

• Crews will work in the street to access valves and hydrants. They will open hydrants, and water will flow into the street. Crews will minimize water pooling and prevent adverse impacts or disturbances with the released water. Hydrants will not be left unattended during flushing. Posted signs will alert residents to maintenance activity in the area.

• Water service should not be impacted during the procedure.
