Indian Health Service (IHS) proposes to provide water and/or sewer (W&S) services for eligible homes belonging to Native Americans within the service areas of the five Maine Tribes: Mi'kmaq Nation, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Passamaquoddy Tribe - Indian Township, Passamaquoddy Tribe - Pleasant Point, and Penobscot Indian Nation. W&S services may include on-site potable water well drilling and development or the installation of septic tank and subsurface drainfields. However, some homes may be connected to community water and/or wastewater systems. This action is subject to review for consistency with the enforceable policies of Maine Coastal Program under 15 CFR 930, subpart C. More information about the project can be found my reading the Indian Health Service bulletin (pdf, 7 pages), published by the Department of Health and Human Services. Public comments will be accepted through January 31, 2025 and can be sent to DMR's Coastal Program.
