By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
WHEREAS, public health is vital to sustaining and improving the Commonwealth, and a hallmark of Virginia's public health network is the extensive collaboration among its hospitals, health systems, and with external partners and stakeholders to advance community health and well-being; and
WHEREAS, healthcare professionals in hospitals and health systems across the Commonwealth demonstrate unwavering resilience as they tirelessly and selflessly care for patients and safeguard community health amid workforce challenges, increased demand for behavioral health services, and ongoing viral respiratory threats; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's hospitals are steadfastly committed to providing high-quality patient care, educating future health care professionals, and promoting community wellness, while also leading efforts to advance population health by addressing social determinants of health, reducing maternal mortality, supporting community violence prevention initiatives, and expanding access to health data; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's hospitals annually provide more than 4.45 million patient days of care, handle more than 813,000 inpatient admissions, account for 91 percent of behavioral health inpatient admissions, and deliver more than 86,000 babies; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's hospitals have significantly contributed to the Commonwealth, providing more than $4.5 billion in community benefit and other types of support in 2024, employing more than 138,200 individuals, and generating more than $68 billion in positive state economic activity; and
WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) has continuously collaborated with hospitals, policymakers, and community partners to ensure the sustainability of Virginia's health care system, transform care delivery, and advance public health and health equity throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Hospital Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank the dedicated individuals within our hospitals and health systems for their critical work and their many outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of the Commonwealth; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize May 10-16, 2026, as VIRGINIA HOSPITAL WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
