On Tuesday, January 27th, Minister of National Defence, Radu Miruță, received, at the Ministry of National Defence headquarters, the visit of the Ambassador of the French Republic to Romania, H.E. Nicolas Warnery.
The talks focused on recent developments in the security environment, with a focus on the regional implications of the war in Ukraine and the strategic role of the Black Sea region in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
The dialogue addressed the Romanian-French defence cooperation, both from an allied perspective and from the two states' contribution to European Union initiatives. France's role in supporting the security of Romania and of the region was highlighted, the Cincu Battle Group being a concrete example of the French commitment.
A distinct point of the meeting was cooperation in the field of defence industry. Thus, the officials analyzed the opportunities for developing joint projects and enhancing military-technical cooperation, in accordance with the European Union's objectives to consolidate the defence industrial and technological base.
At the same time, the two officials held discussions on the coordination of Romania's and France's positions within NATO and the European Union and the priorities for NATO Summit in Ankara in 2026, including the importance of implementing the decisions adopted at last year's NATO Summit in The Hague regarding increasing defence investments and the strategic relevance of the Black Sea region for Euro-Atlantic security.
"Romania attaches great importance to strengthening cooperation with France, a strategic partner and first-rate ally, in support of regional, European and Euro-Atlantic security, as well as of strengthening the deterrence and defence posture on the allied Eastern Flank. In this context, enhancing bilateral defence cooperation, including through the development of concrete partnerships in the defence industry, represents a strategic priority for Romania, aimed at increasing interoperability, consolidating military capabilities and resilience," the Minister of National Defence declared.
The meeting confirmed the positive dynamics of the Romanian-French Strategic Partnership and the prospects for enhancing defence cooperation in the current security context.
