One of the largest employers in North Port was recognized with the quarterly GEM Award last week by the City of North Port.
The City's Economic Development Division presented the award to King Plastic Corporation, the leading manufacturer of quality polymer sheets, slabs and massive shapes headquartered in North Port. The recognition took place during a special City Commission meeting held on April 2 in the Commission Chambers.
The GEM Award celebrates local businesses that have become integral to the community, demonstrating stability, character and long-term contribution to North Port's economic and cultural life.
"Their commitment, innovation and local impact make a difference both here and globally," North Port's Business Retention & Expansion Coordinator Mike McLellan said during the meeting.
Launched in 1968, the privately-owned King Plastic opened its 150,000-square-foot plant on North Toledo Blade Boulevard in 2001. It focuses its plastics manufacturing on marine, industrial and architectural applications.
King Plastic owner Jeff King attended the meeting to accept the award.
"We are really blessed to be a part of this community," King said during the meeting. "We look forward to continued growth over the years and giving back to North Port even further."
In addition to supporting North Port's economy and providing jobs for city residents, King Plastic is also partnering with the YMCA to build a new Early Learning Center. This will not only provide child care services to King Plastic employees but also to the surrounding workforce and neighborhoods. Work is planned to begin May 2026.
