From legacy to learning: Tyler advances next phase of Stewart Park construction

The City of Tyler is moving forward with the next phase of Stewart Park, marking a major step in creating the community's first new park since Faulkner Park opened in 2001.

On Wednesday, April 22, the City Council approved two contracts to support key park amenities, including playground equipment, park furnishings, and restrooms. Together, these improvements will help shape Stewart Park into a place for play, learning, and connection to nature.

Located at 2713 Frankston Highway and housing the trailhead of Legacy Trail Phase 2, Stewart Park is designed to serve both nearby neighborhoods and the broader community. Planned features include a pavilion, playground features, picnic tables, restrooms, and a trail leading to a raised stage for educational opportunities. Educational signage will be added on the trail leading up to the stage. These features will honor Mrs. Gladys Stewart, a longtime teacher, and the legacy of her and her husband, T.B. Stewart, who gifted the land to the City through their estate.

"This park represents more than just land," said Leanne Robinette, Director of Parks and Recreation. "It is an investment in Tyler, our park system, and our community for future generations to come."

As part of the approved action, the City Council awarded a $220,997.19 contract to Kraftsman Commercial Playgrounds and Water Parks for the installation of playground equipment and necessary park furnishings, such as the pavilion and picnic tables.

The Council also approved a separate $113,379.58 contract with CXT Inc. for the installation of restrooms at Stewart Park.

Funding for the Stewart Park project comes from Keep Tyler Beautiful's Capital Improvement Park Fund, which is supported by tipping fees collected at the landfill.

Plans for the park were shaped in part by community and neighborhood feedback shared during a public meeting, helping guide the features and overall vision for the space.
