The EU's agreed approach in coordination with our trans-Atlantic partners is the key to the protection of the security of European citizens and stability in the region. Developments in the Middle East cause serious concerns about new migratory pressure on the EU, while they pose a risk of terrorist threats. This was stated by Prime Minister Andrey Gurov at his meeting with the President of the European Council António Costa. They spoke on the eve of the European Council meeting to be held tomorrow in Brussels. The Prime Minister and the President discussed enhancement of security, sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine, and the Multiannual Financial Framework.
The Prime Minister called to keep Europe's focus on Russia's aggression against Ukraine and to take an agreed approach to the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and the release of the Ukraine Support Loan. The discussion noted that a mismatch, if any, in the approaches, including in the wake of the escalation in the Middle East and rising energy prices, would seriously undermine the effectiveness of restrictive measures.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Prime Minister Gurov stressed that maintenance of maritime security and respect for freedom of shipping are of paramount importance. Along with that, Iran should be disallowed to develop nuclear weapons.
