WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Kelly Morrison (MN-03) and Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) introduced the Veteran Burial Benefit Correction Act, legislation which increases and standardizes burial and funeral benefits for veterans who die from service-connected disabilities. To keep up with rising costs and ensure consistent coverage for eligible veterans' families, this legislation raises the fixed burial and funeral expense payment from $2,000 to $3,000.
Representative Morrison is a member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.
"Every veteran who serves our country deserves to be laid to rest honorably. This bipartisan legislation would increase burial and funeral service benefits for the families of veterans who have passed from a service-connected disability. I'm proud to lead this bill and look forward to seeing it passed into law so our veterans can be honored appropriately without financially straining their loved ones," said Congresswoman Kelly Morrison.
"The families of our fallen servicemembers and veterans suffer greatly when losing a loved one due to injuries sustained in defense of our great nation," said Congressman Brad Finstad. "I am proud to introduce legislation that helps their legacy live on by ensuring veterans' families can cover the cost of funerals and burials for their loved ones who have died from service-connected disabilities."
Background:
-
In 2020, Congress passed legislation to increase burial benefits for non-service-connected deaths, linking them to inflation.
-
This resulted in the benefit amount for deaths unrelated to service being higher than that for service-connected deaths, which remains capped at $2,000.
-
Companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senators James Risch (R-ID) and Angus King (I-ME).
