WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 3486, Kate's Law, with bipartisan support:
"Americans overwhelmingly agree that violent criminals without legal status have no place in our country and should be held accountable to the full extent of our nation's immigration laws. The previous Administration's inaction on the border led to a full-blown crisis that drained taxpayers' wallets and made our communities less safe.
"Kate Steinle's murder was a senseless tragedy. We need action to deter deported migrants from attempting to illegally cross our borders again, especially those with criminal histories. I'm focused on securing our border and fixing our broken immigration system: that's why I joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to pass this commonsense bill today."
