Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on President Trump’s United Nations General Assembly Address

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement in response to President Trump's remarks before the United Nations General Assembly today:

"President Trump's speech was a perfect encapsulation of how his foreign policy has isolated and weakened America globally and created a historic opening for U.S. adversaries. By turning away from our allies and withdrawing from global bodies, we are ceding ground to China, Russia and others and letting them set the global agenda at the expense of America and our citizens. The United Nations and multilateral institutions are a force multiplier on key priorities like stopping the flow of fentanyl, keeping deadly diseases from reaching our borders and combatting cyber scams that threaten Americans. Abandoning America's hard fought leadership while getting nothing in return is not a good deal.

"President Trump has also yet to deliver on his campaign promise of quickly ending devastating conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and elsewhere. Over a month after inviting Putin to the United States with a red carpet welcome, President Trump has nothing to show for it and Putin is actively testing NATO's resolve. A humanitarian crisis continues to worsen in Gaza and Israeli hostages remain in captivity. America needs less bluster and more constructive action from this President to finally bring these conflicts to a close."
