Portugal orders three next-generation frigates from Italy

Portugal and Italy have signed an agreement for the acquisition of three next-generation frigates for the Portuguese Navy, including through-life support, technology transfer and all the necessary arrangements for the operational use of the vessels throughout their service life, estimated at more than 30 years. The three frigates are scheduled to be delivered between 2029 and 2030.

The agreement was signed in Rome in the presence of the Minister of National Defence Nuno Melo and Italian Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's official visit to Italy.

The acquisition forms part of the modernisation of the Portuguese Navy and the Armed Forces to ensure they are equipped to respond to the current geopolitical environment and emerging security threats, enabling them to fulfil national maritime missions, meet Portugal's international defence and collective security commitments, and continue providing permanent support to the population.

The investment in surface naval capabilities and anti-submarine warfare also includes cooperation with the defence industry, with a strong involvement of Portuguese companies, technology transfer, the revitalisation of the Alfeite naval shipyard and a significant return for the national economy.

The decision represents a substantial share of Portugal's €5.8 billion investment under the SAFE instrument. The European SAFE programme constitutes the largest investment in the re-equipment of the Portuguese Armed Forces since the restoration of democracy, covering the naval, land, air-including drones-and space domains.

During the visit, the two Defence Ministers also held a bilateral working meeting.
