The Albany County Legislative Black Caucus (LBC) led its second annual Denim Day campaign this April in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Denim Day is a global movement that began in response to a 1998 Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction. The justices argued that because the victim's jeans were tight, she must have helped the perpetrator remove them, which implied consent. Outraged by the decision, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work the next day as an act of protest. That act of defiance lives on through the LBC's Denim Day campaign, which invited community members to submit photos of themselves wearing denim in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence. These photos were compiled into a community collage.
The collage features images of more than 70 participants who supported the campaign, including employees from the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, the Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center, and Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, as well as members of the Albany County Legislature, its legislative staff, and other community members.
There is power in numbers, and this collage serves as a meaningful reminder of what it looks like to stand together for an important cause. While April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Legislative Black Caucus remains committed to protecting and supporting our communities year-round.
