The Hon. Gilles Arsenault, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Artificial Intelligence issued the following statement on the world premiere of The Snake.
"Prince Edward Island is known globally for many things, from our world-class food products to our iconic red cliffs. Today, we are adding a new dimension to our global reputation as the world gets to know our Island through film.
As The Snake makes its world premiere film debut at the prestigious SXSW film festival, it marks a significant moment for our province. Produced by Sharlene Kelly and directed by Jenna MacMillan of Club Red Productions, this represents a monumental milestone for Sharlene, Jenna, and the casting crew who worked on the Snake.
This achievement is a testament to the vision, hard work, and tenacity of this Island team and their belief in the PEI film industry. From initial concept to production to international acclaim, The Snake shows that our Island is not just a pretty backdrop; it is a powerhouse of creativity and talent where storytellers can bring their vision to life. Current and aspiring film industry professionals can build and scale all this on our Island and make an exceptional career of it.
Following the success of several Island filmmakers' work being featured at events in Cannes, Galway, Tokyo, and across Canada, including locally produced Who's Yer Father, one of the top 20 English Canadian films of 2024, and Diggstown, a six-episode Canadian series filmed on the Island, The Snake continues to demonstrate that the PEI film industry plays an important role in the Island economy. I am proud to see the continued growth of this sector. Our government knows that for every dollar invested into the industry, it results in a direct return of three dollars that goes towards small Island businesses, local talent, and our communities.
On behalf of the Province and all Islanders, I want to congratulate everyone on the Snake crew for this phenomenal achievement. You haven't just made a feature film; you've shown the world what Prince Edward Island is capable of!"
