In the interests of learner and teacher safety, and after consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, a decision has been taken to close schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, and Thursday, 4 June 2026.
All public ordinary and special needs schools in Eden and Central Karoo Education District are affected by the closure, which is due to the heavy rainfall warnings for the area.
The affected schools have received official notice of the closure from the Head of Department, and have been requested to communicate the closures to parents.
All other schools in the Western Cape will be open unless approval has been granted for closure, which will be done on a case-by-case basis.
Our default position is always to keep schools open and only close schools in exceptional circumstances, but we are mindful of the severity of the warnings in place.
All schools are expected to open on Friday, 5 June 2026.
We will continuously monitor and evaluate the situation, and If any further individual school closures are necessary after Thursday, communication will be sent to parents of affected schools directly.
