Draft Community Wildfire Protection Plan published for Kluane Lake (Lhù’ààn Mân) area

Published April 27, 2026

The Government of Yukon has published a draft Community Wildfire Protection Plan for the Kluane Lake (Lhù'ààn Mân) area. The government's Wildland Fire Management Branch created the plan with support and local knowledge from Kluane First Nation and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

The draft plan aims to reduce the wildfire risks around Burwash Landing, Destruction Bay, Silver City and Cultus Bay. It identifies the wildfire risks to the communities and areas where fuel management work should be implemented. The draft plan also provides recommendations that residents can take to reduce the risk.

The draft plan is available on Yukon.ca, along with information about how to submit feedback. A community town hall will give people the chance to suggest changes to the plan. The town hall will take place on May 8, 2026, at 11 am in Jaquot Hall at 15 Sedata Street, Burwash Landing.

Wildfire resiliency is an important intergovernmental project. By blending local knowledge with technical wildfire expertise, Yukon communities are creating high-level plans to reduce wildfire risk. With priority treatment areas identified, the Government of Yukon and First Nations and municipal governments can propose and fund projects based on the plan.

Quick facts
  • Community Wildfire Protection Plans have been completed for five communities: Dawson, Faro, Haines Junction, Mayo and Teslin. In Whitehorse, the Government of Yukon supports the municipal Wildfire Risk Reduction Strategy.

  • Community Wildfire Protection Plans support community-level actions, but people's home FireSmart practices are also important. Regular yard maintenance and FireSmart renovations are the most effective ways to reduce home wildfire risk.
