SCO Secretary-General meets with the Secretary of the CCP Provincial Committee of Hainan Province

On April 12, 2026, during a visit to Hainan Province, the People's Republic of China, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Nurlan Yermekbayev met with Feng Fei, Secretary of the Communist Party of China Provincial Committee.

The Secretary-General thanked the regional leadership for its interest in developing cooperation with the SCO, as well as for the invitation to participate in the 6th China International Consumer Products Expo. Nurlan Yermekbayev informed the Party Committee Secretary about the work being carried out within the SCO in the areas of economy, culture, and tourism, and put forward several ideas regarding potential areas and types of cooperation with SCO member states. The parties exchanged views on the possibility of organizing a tourism and culture event on Hainan Island with the engagement of the Organization's member states and dialogue partners. It was noted that a meeting of the heads of tourism administrations of SCO member states will be held in April of this year under Kyrgyzstan's chairmanship.

The Secretary-General proposed making broader use of the potential of Hainan Island, which was granted the status of a Free Trade Port in December 2025, to promote products from SCO member states in Chinese and foreign markets.

Nurlan Yermekbayev informed that the SCO is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its founding in 2026, noting that over these years the Organization has evolved from a union of six states into the world's largest transregional association.

Feng Fei familiarized the SCO Secretariat delegation with the achievements of Hainan Province in the areas of trade, tourism, agriculture, medicine, high-tech industry, and the aerospace sector. He also provided information on the operation of free trade logistics centers with special customs regimes.

The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere.
