BYHALIA, Mississippi (March 2, 2026) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will hold a community meeting on Thursday, March 5 to inform the community of the agencies' response to trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination in private drinking water wells.

EPA is assisting MDEQ by working to provide bottled water and whole house filters to properties with TCE contamination above the Federal Drinking Water Maximum Contaminant Level for TCE of 5 parts per billion (ppb). EPA is continuing to sample residential wells in the area of interest and MDEQ is working to determine the source and extent of contamination.

EPA Region 4 responded to a request from MDEQ for support in addressing trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination in private drinking water wells in DeSoto and Marshall counties in northern Mississippi, near Byhalia.
