WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted today to pass H.R. 3638, the Electric Supply Chain Act, a bill aimed at giving the United States a clear and honest understanding of the vulnerabilities inside the nation's electric grid. With demand projected to surge and major generation sources scheduled to retire, the legislation ensures policymakers know exactly where the supply chain is exposed before those weaknesses turn into real consequences for American families.
"America's energy future depends on whether we can build and maintain the grid fast enough to meet rising demand," said Congressman Harrigan. "Right now we're flying blind on too many parts of that supply chain. If we don't understand the choke points, the workforce gaps, or where China controls critical materials, then we can't fix the problem. This bill gives us the visibility we need to stay competitive and protect the reliability families count on every single day."
The Electric Supply Chain Act directs the Department of Energy to conduct regular assessments of the supply chain for electricity generation and transmission. The bill requires DOE to analyze risks, identify barriers to domestic manufacturing, evaluate dependence on foreign entities of concern, and consult directly with industry experts to capture emerging issues. It also calls for recommendations to strengthen and expand the supply chain, from critical materials to key grid components.
With House passage, the Electric Supply Chain Act now heads to the Senate, where Congressman Harrigan is urging swift action to ensure the United States can meet growing electricity demand, build more resilient infrastructure, and reduce reliance on adversarial nations for essential materials.
