Atlanta, Texas - Work to widen a portion of U.S. Highway (U.S.) 82 in western Bowie County is scheduled to get underway soon, according to plans awarded in March by TxDOT.
The project includes widening 6.8 miles of U.S. 82 from County Road 3403 at the Red River County line to U.S. 259. "Once complete, the project will feature two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, a continuous 16-foot-wide paved median and 10-foot shoulders," said Texarkana Area Engineer Dana Moore.
This project will also include accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists. The existing portion of the Northeast Texas Trail System in this area will be relocated about 25 feet to the south. This will include clearing and grading to reestablish the trail in its new location.
Highway 19 Construction LLC was awarded the project with a low bid of $54,806,521. Work is expected to begin in June and take about four years to complete. The estimated completion date is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
