LA-02 Constituent Mike Friedman to Join Congressman Carter as Guest to the State of the Union Address

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) will be joined by one of his constituents, Mike Friedman, as his guest to the State of the Union Address on Tuesday, February 24.

Mike's story underscores the urgent need to protect and extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which are a lifeline for thousands of Louisiana families and small business owners.

After losing his job at age 60 when a federal contract was abruptly canceled, Mike turned to the ACA marketplace for coverage for himself and his husband. With the help of tax credits, they were able to afford a comprehensive plan. But once the subsidies expired, their premiums and out-of-pocket costs skyrocketed, putting essential care out of reach.

"Just last week I went for a routine, simple procedure. Or so I thought," Friedman said. "I went to check in at the hospital for the outpatient procedure and was informed that my share of the cost would be $5,700. I had to cancel the procedure because I cannot afford that much money."

Congressman Carter said Mike's experience is a stark reminder of what is at stake.

"No one in the United States should have to choose between their health and their financial security," said Congressman Carter. "Mike's story is not unique - it represents thousands of families across Louisiana who rely on ACA tax credits to afford coverage. I was proud to vote to extend these lifesaving subsidies, and I will continue fighting to ensure that health care remains accessible and affordable for every American."

Congressman Carter continues to fight for the extension of these tax credits and proudly voted to pass a three-year extension, with 17 Republicans joining Democrats to put people over politics and do the right thing for their constituents.

As President Trump addresses the nation, Congressman Carter will continue to advocate for policies that lower costs, strengthen health care access, and protect working families in Louisiana and across the country.
