Norway imposes additional sanctions and measures against violent settlers in the West Bank

"Violence by settlers in Palestine has reached extreme levels. Palestinians are being killed and injured, homes and private property are being demolished, and entire communities are being destroyed. At the same time, the Israeli Government is actively facilitating a broad expansion of settlements in breach of international law and illegal Israeli control over the West Bank," said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.

On 28 May, the EU decided to impose sanctions on a further three Israeli individuals and four organisations on the grounds of serious human rights violations, which come in addition to sanctions that are already in force. Norway is aligning itself with these measures. The individuals and organisations in question are responsible for grave abuses against Palestinians. The individuals will have their financial assets frozen and will be subject to travel restrictions, while the organisations will have their financial assets frozen. This constitutes the third round of measures adopted by the EU which Norway has aligned itself with.

In addition to the EU's sanctions against three settlers and four organisations, Norway has decided to introduce entry bans on more than 20 violent settlers. Norway is implementing these measures in coordination with Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

"Israeli settlements are in violation of international law. As the occupying power, Israel has a legal obligation under international law to protect the Palestinian civilian population. Israel must put an end to settler violence against Palestinians, including by holding those responsible to account," the Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

The dramatic developments in the West Bank have been thoroughly documented by the United Nations and human rights organisations.

"The negative trend over the past three years demonstrates that it is more important than ever to continue efforts towards a two-state solution in which both Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom, security and dignity. The individuals and organisations that Norway is now imposing sanctions and other measures against constitute a direct threat to this objective," said Eide.
