Minister Champagne advances Canada's economic interests at G20 meeting in North Carolina

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, today concluded a series of high-level meetings in Asheville, North Carolina, where he and Tiff Macklem, Governor of the Bank of Canada, represented Canada at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting.

In a world marked by uncertainty and division, Canada is building a stronger and more resilient economy by forging strategic partnerships with like-minded partners abroad, and by advancing a strong economic plan at home.

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, today concluded a series of high-level meetings in Asheville, North Carolina, where he and Tiff Macklem, Governor of the Bank of Canada, represented Canada at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. The gathering brought together international partners to discuss the global economic outlook, growth and financial stability, artificial intelligence, digital assets, financial literacy, and efforts to combat fraud. Canada used the opportunity to advance key priorities and reinforce cooperation on shared economic challenges.

On the margins of the meeting, Minister Champagne also held a series of bilateral discussions with international partners, including representatives of the European Union, France, Germany, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Poland, Qatar, Ireland, Singapore, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the International Monetary Fund. These discussions focused on deepening economic cooperation, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and strengthening collaboration in sectors where Canada is well positioned to contribute to global prosperity, including critical minerals, clean and conventional energy and agriculture.

During these engagements, the Minister also highlighted Canada's leadership in advancing defense financing, including the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB) and the next phase of the initiative. Minister Champagne discussed opportunities with interested partners to support the next phase of the initiative and deepen collaboration in pursuit of this shared vision of economic and security resilience.

While in Asheville, the Minister also participated in a G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. Discussions focused on global economic developments, artificial intelligence, and Russia's illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's Finance Minister, Sergii Marchenko, also joined virtually for part of the meeting.
